What A Dog Taught Me About Intuition
A few weeks ago, I did something I never thought I would do: I got an indoor dog (keep reading to see pics).
Growing up in the country with horses, chickens, dogs, and cats—all of which lived outside—the thought of an indoor pet was completely foreign to me. I never imagined I'd want one.
But over the last few years, a quiet tug started building inside me. It was a deep knowing. I found myself daydreaming about the exact kind of dog I'd want, where her bed would go, and what I would name her.
About every quarter, I'd ask my husband if we should get a dog. He'd say no, and honestly, I'd feel a wave of relief. Part of me wanted him to shut the idea down just so I could stop longing for it.
Then, everything shifted.
During the lunar eclipse in August, I opened Facebook to check messages, and a post from a breeder I'd followed a year prior popped up: “Due to no fault of their own, this dog needs a new home.”
I felt a massive, full-body YES. This was my dog. I could feel it in my bones.
I courageously asked my husband one last time. (Like me, he grew up with outdoor pets, plus he has allergies, so I completely understood his hesitation.) But this time, he was open to it! The dog met all of our conditions, and suddenly, it was actually possible. I scheduled to pick her up that Sunday.
Cue the panic.
The Saturday before pickup, I woke up sick—and all my deepest fears came crashing in.
“What are you even thinking, Morgan? This could wreck your marriage! What if it's too much?”
Overwhelmed, I backed out and told the woman I couldn't make it on Sunday.
Just as I thought the door was closed, my mom called me with shocking information. She had experienced a vision: her late sister came to her, saying her soul was actually tied to this dog—that she really wanted to be with me and support me.
Well, dang. How do you say no to that?
Still wanting a second opinion, I called a mentor. She tuned in and confirmed that this dog would be a wonderful addition to our family and a powerful catalyst for my own growth.
I sat with it for a day, decided to trust the process, and drove four hours there and four hours back to bring her home.
The real test
The first few days were intensely challenging. I quickly learned that "puppy blues" are very real—even when you get an older dog, the "new dog blues" hit hard. It was so uncomfortable. New smells, new sounds, a new being, and a completely flipped routine. It was a lot for my sensitive nervous system, and I questioned everything.
But growth is rarely comfortable.
Now? I am so, so happy. She is incredible. She has brought so many good things into my life already: more exercise, new friends, sleep support for my son, and she even acts as my little helper during client sessions!
Meet Wren! She’s a 4 year old mini Australian Labradoodle! Which collar do you like best on her, pink or orange?!
The takeaway
If there is one thing I want you to take away from my story, it is this: Intuition is always spot on. Fear is not.
Even when a choice stems straight from your intuition, it can still bring immense challenges at first. Stepping into the unknown is hard for our nervous systems. But on the other side of that initial discomfort is profound expansion and joy.
If your intuition is whispering a "yes" to you right now—even if fear is screaming a warning right alongside it—trust the tug. It will always work out.
